Canadians Can be Confident About the Products They Use
Since 1987, Canada has studied new ingredients to assess their environmental and health risks before they are permitted entry or are allowed to be used in products offered for sale. Recently, Canada became the first country in the world to undertake a systematic examination of the existing chemicals and other substances in use prior to introduction of the evaluation of new substances before 1987. In Canada, this represents some 23,000 substances. The DSL review, or "categorization" (CSDSL), was completed in September 2006 and took place so that government can continue to uphold and further enhance the protocols in place to ensure the safe use of substances in food, beverage, personal care and consumer products sold in Canada.

On December 8, 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced the Government of Canada's post categorization Chemical Management Plan and issued a challenge to industry. For more information on the Government's Chemical Management Plan, see these government links:

Challenge to Industry
The government’s Industry Challenge Program is a positive next step that Canadian industry is fully prepared to take up. We will provide the government with the best data at our disposal to ensure studies on high priority substances are completed expeditiously and with the utmost scientific rigour.

Canadian industry applauds the government for being the first and only country to undertake such a comprehensive review as a basis for informed decision making. This achievement deserves national and international recognition.
